Name Plate project for Orange Street Cemetery

Together with the United Congregation of Israelites (UCI), the Jamaican Jewish Cemeteries Preservation Fund (JJCPF) has identified graves at the Orange Street Cemetery, that over the years have found themselves without name plaques of any kind. It has been possible to identify the names of individuals in these unmarked graves by using an original hand-inscribed map, synagogue registers, and other documents. These names are then inscribed on simple, modest marble plaques which are in turn installed at the respective plots. The project honours temporarily forgotten individuals. Many of the surnames are well-known in the Jamaican Jewish community, and no doubt are the forebears of contemporary family members that still bear these names.
